Eff this , I’m moving to an Island 🏝️

How many times in your life have you said that? I have at least 5 times in the last few years, especially since COVID . So we figured out how to make the move and now we are living the island life. Let’s back it up a bit…
It’s been awhile since I last blogged in Costa Rica…6 years ago?! Doesn’t feel like it, and a lot has changed for us. For those that don’t know us and want to learn how to do what we are doing or just follow along, Welcome! For our family & friends, SORRY I took forever to get this going 😬
To learn more about us & what changes in our lives led us to moving here, read this first: Hi!
First off, I am the tardiest person ever. I intended to start writing a year or so ago when we decided to move from Canada to Caye Caulker Belize, document the steps we took to make the big move and so forth. I was just so busy with trying to juggle my online work, packing our life up and tending to our 175lb Velcro Great Dane….Also, how in the world are we getting this giant dog to a tiny island?! Are we nuts?? 🥜 Some say Yes! We say, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED HATERS LOL
We purchased a nice 1/2 acre lot on the canal in Caye Caulker in early 2022 once we were able to travel again. We had plans to sell our house and build on it as soon as possible since the housing market was still going strong, but by the Summer it cooled down. We decided to pause that plan and look into other options. All the “what ifs” start popping up and the problem with most of us is, we live our lives in fear of these “what ifs”, and we don’t take risks or make big changes. Those “what ifs” are not always something negative, (which are the ones we focus on).
“What ifs”
As soon as you start thinking about making a drastic change in your life, this is what happens. Whether it’s your thoughts or someone else’s , this always happens, usually in a negative way. Obviously these pertain to us moving from Canada to Belize Full-time;
- You sell your house/possessions but need to move back home
- You rent your house long term and something happens with the Tenants
- You rent your house short term and it sits empty half the time
- A family member becomes ill
- It’s too hot there for us/the dog
- We don’t want to build on our lot
- We don’t want to sell our house but we have to in order to build
- We can’t find somewhere to live or don’t like it
- We can’t adjust to island living
- Something happens to the Dog (no vet available)
- Something happens to us (no hospital)
- What about our OHIP?
I could go on. This is why it’s easier for people to just stay put in their comfortable rut sometimes, because of the unknown. But you know what? No Risk, No Reward. You only live once. All these things can happen but will they? Also, nothing is permanent. There are always solutions to every problem, and you can always make the decision to make a change if something doesn’t work. What are you willing to let go of or risk losing in case the experience is a positive one? All we can do is try right? At this moment in our lives, it felt right to make the move, no matter how long it may last. We decided to go with the flow, since many factors are involved in each scenario and most are unpredictable and unavoidable. Covid has taught us how to pivot in our businesses, so we must learn how to do that in our lives.
